In quick succession, British Petroleum and the Tokyo Electric Power Company were in the news due to major environmental disasters. In addition to the damage that the oil disaster caused in the US and that the nuclear disaster caused in Japan, the reputation of both companies took a big hit. Tepco and BP both had to work hard to alleviate puplic anxiety and to regain consumers’ trust. What messages needed to be conveyed and to whom? What should have been said? These questions are dealt with the in Dutch Master’s specialisation Communicatie en Beïnvloeding.

Both companies had to deal with international governments and relations. How can you effectively use communication and language while considering the linguistic and cultural differences of everyone involved? This kind of question is the essence of the English specialisation International Business Communication.

The Master’s programme in Communication and Information Studies has the following specialisations:

International Business Communication (in English)

This English-taught master’s programme provides you with the knowledge base and practical tools to function as an independent communication specialist in organisational communication in diverse international contexts. You will learn how factors such as language(s), culture and globalisation play a role in the management and communications of organisations that operate internationally, and how these factors can be taken into account to optimise communication with and between international stakeholders, inside and outside the organisation.

Spatial planners are fascinated by on-going and future changes in cities and regions and take on the role as managers of those spatial transformations - think of: regenerating shopping districts or old industrial sites; designating water retention areas; shaping urban mobility concepts for the future. Related challenges vary in scale, from individual property to European policy making. The programme's subtitle ‘managing smart cities and regions’ reflects the challenges of current and future urban societies, at a time that ambitions for a ‘New Urban Agenda’ for the 21st century are formulated, with policies and strategies to create more sustainable and equitable urban spaces.

Cities, Water and Climate Change Gain all necessary knowledge and skills for working on the nexus between urban planning, water and environmental management.

European Spatial and Environmental Planning Become a spatial planner who understands EU policies, can cooperate with planners across borders and engages with other sectors like environment and economic development.

Planning, Land and Real Estate Development Discover new perspectives on urban development which you can use in a future role as city developer, either in the public or private sector.

Strategic Spatial Planning Focus on the strategic and visionary elements of what might be called the ‘new’ planning enterprise.

Urban and Regional Mobility Look into different integrated mobility systems or transport modes at different spatial scales. Discover new practices and strategies to provide innovative mobility solutions.

River Delta Development

River Delta Development is a master program in English. It is ais a joint degree offered by the universities of applied sciences of HZ, VHL, and Rotterdam. The three universities of applied sciences each strive to provide high-quality education that prepares you for an ever-changing work field and is closely interwoven with professional practice and practical research. The focus lies on helping you develop into a facilitator of change in international delta regions.

This master program trains students to be facilitators of change for river deltas. Everywhere in the world, urbanisation and climate change are encroaching upon these fertile, ecologically valuable regions. The challenge is to decrease the vulnerability of river deltas while simultaneously increasing the opportunities for healthy economic and ecological development. In the Master’s programme River Delta Development, these developments are viewed as transitions: progressive, complex changes and adjustments in river delta systems that demand professionals who can intervene effectively. These transitions require innovative, multidisciplinary, and holistic solutions. Versatile delta professionals are required, who not only have knowledge of river delta systems (coasts, seas, and rivers) and the latest developments, but also possess the necessary research and communication skills to make meaningful contributions to these transitions. The textile industry must reinvigorate itself in order to survive and to keep up with the demands in today’s economy and society. Therefore, in this master programme you will acquire knowledge on new textile materials, such as composites, new applications and smart textiles, innovative products and state of the art techniques, such as 3D printing and digitalization. You will learn to develop new product-market combinations, new sustainable products and processes as well as new business concepts based on crossovers with other fields.
